The topic of my diploma project was creating a light music center in the downtown of Debrecen next to the boulevard crossing the city center. Choosing the location of the plan was determined by the proximity of the Kodály Zoltán Music Academy and the future Classical Music Hall, because these and the designed building could form a complex musical center in the area. The plot is a truncated urban scar, which the city has not yet been able to heal since the construction of the boulevard. Gable walls, irregular plot boundaries and a row of multi-storey paneled apartments ont he other side of the road break the image of the city center.

The Más-Mozaik Sociocultural Association has been running the ’Rocksuli’ in Debrecen since 1989, which has grown into a faculty of more than twenty people and an institution taking in hundreds of young people. Rocksuli in Debrecen has provided the opportunity for music education regardless of age and education, and the number of their students is growing every year. The school has moved nine times in the last two decades. It currently operates in the Youth House, which is still not the right place, as it wasn’t designed for this purpose. Poor acoustics make the situation of teachers and students difficult, so the primary task of my project was to design an acoustically well-functioning music school, which consists of units more isolated both within the building and from its external enviroment.

Secondly, the goal was to create a music complex in which, in addition to education, a concert hall is also placed, where students can use their acquired knowledge, practice, hold concerts and even meet the musicians of the Hungarian pop music scene. A varied and colorful musical life can develop here, whether it is concerts of jazz, rock or alternative bands. In addition to strenghtening diversity, I ensure self-sustainability with the appearance of studios and rehearsal rooms. Rocksuli also has a studio of a few square meters and a small rehearsal room that students can use for the semester performances, but they need larger spaces now. Furthermore if experienced musicians use the space for their recordings it gives an opportunity for communication between beginners and professionals, too.
